Medical Social Services

There are times when you may need help to cope with your social, financial and medical needs. Talk to our Medical Social Workers (MSWs) if you need support in these areas:

Crisis Intervention

If you or someone in your family is experiencing any of the following crises:

  • Domestic violence
  • Elder or child abuse or neglect
  • Depression with suicidal thoughts
  • Attempted suicide

Please talk to a MSW immediately to work out a safety plan for you and your family members involved. The MSW will link you up with community support to help you overcome the crisis.

Care Planning and Support for Caregivers

While caregiving can be satisfying and meaningful, it can also be physically and emotionally draining.

Speak to an MSW to find out how to better manage your own care or the care of your family member. If necessary, the MSW will refer you to community-based services so that you or your family member can continue to be cared for at home, for as long as possible. If living at home is no longer a viable care option, you can also explore the option of residential care with the MSW.

Counselling Support

If you are facing difficulty coping with the impact of medical conditions, caregiver stress, family relationship problems or other life's stresses, the MSW can provide counselling support for you and your family members.

Financial Assistance

If you have financial difficulty and are unable to afford your basic daily living expenses, mobility aids, home care equipment or medical-related items, the MSW will assess your financial situation and make appropriate financial applications to help you.

Information and Referral

You may talk to the MSW to find out which community resources would be helpful to you. The MSW can link you to these organisations and assistance schemes if necessary.

Physiotherapy Services

You may see a physiotherapist at our polyclinics if you need to:

  • Manage pain and injuries in your arms, shoulders, neck, back or lower limb
  • Improve the way you walk after injuries or illness
  • Learn to use walking aids such as crutches or walking stick
  • Learn to prevent falls and move with ease
  • Manage your weight through exercise
  • Manage your osteoporosis
  • Get advice on ergonomics (how you interact with your work environment)

Our physiotherapists will teach you how to cope with the difficulties you may face in your daily activities, or modify your activities due to your acute or chronic illnesses. Our aim is to help you relieve pain, move with ease, resume your daily functions and prevent further injury. Physiotherapy sessions at our clinics include both physical exercise and/or manual therapy to help you recover fully.

Falls Prevention and Management for Elderly patients

It is common for the elderly to be injured after a fall, especially those above 65 years old.

If you have this problem, you may talk to one of our physiotherapists who will assess your physical condition and find out the causes of your falls. Common causes of falls are poor balance, weak joints and lack of flexibility. Your physiotherapist will come up with a plan with you and recommend relevant treatments to reduce your risk of falling.

Please get a referral from your polyclinic doctor before you make an appointment to see a physiotherapist.

Podiatry Services

Foot problems such as heel pain or arch pain can prevent you from carrying out your activities effectively and efficiently. You may visit the podiatry services at our polyclinics to diagnose, treat and manage the following foot conditions:

  • Corns or calluses
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Heel pain
  • Foot pain associated with high arched or flat feet
  • Diabetic foot ulcers and wounds

If you have foot conditions related to chronic medical conditions, such as diabetic foot ulcers and foot wounds, they may lead to serious complications. Our team of podiatrists, working together with doctors and nurses, can help you get back on your feet by assessing your foot condition and recommending appropriate treatments for you.

In addition, the podiatrist can give you advice on foot care or footwear to manage your condition. If necessary, insoles may be prescribed.

All new patients and patients who have not visited a podiatrist for more than a year require a doctor's referral to see a podiatrist. Your doctor will examine you to make sure there are no underlying medical conditions to your foot problems. After the doctor's examination and referral, the podiatrist will provide an assessment and discuss ways to manage your foot problem.

All patients are seen strictly by appointment only.
