Basic Dental Treatments

You may see a dentist at our polyclinics for routine check-ups and basic dental treatments such as:

  • Regular dental care
  • Scaling and polishing
  • Fillings
  • Extractions and minor surgery under local anaesthesia

Regular Dental Care

Having your teeth checked regularly by a dentist helps to detect dental problems early and keep your teeth healthy and strong. During the dental check-up, your dentist will:

  • assess if your gums are healthy
  • check for cavities in your teeth
  • check the margins of previous fillings and restorations
  • screen for oral cancer and other oral diseases
  • evaluate your jaw alignment

Your dentist may also take X-rays of your teeth, carry out professional cleaning to remove plaque and stain build-up, and apply fluoride to your teeth.

Scaling and Polishing

The dentist may do scaling for your teeth to gently remove plaque and calculus deposits without harming your teeth. The hardened tartar that sticks to the teeth can also be removed by using specialised ultrasonic scaler.

After scaling, your dentist will polish your teeth to remove stains. Polishing is done with a special toothpaste-like material with a **soft rubber cup that spins around the teeth.

Scaling and polishing are important for your teeth as they:

  • Remove tartar to prevent gum recession and gum diseases which are the main causes of shaky teeth and tooth loss
  • Remove stains caused by food such as coffee or tea, or smoking
  • Help you prevent oral diseases like cavities and tooth decay

Fillings

If you have a tooth cavity, you may need bonded fillings to close the hole. These are composite (white) fillings that can be used in place of amalgam (silver) fillings. They are more attractive and bonds to the tooth for a tight seal. These fillings are also strong, stain-resistant and can be matched to your natural tooth colour to make them unnoticeable. Composite fillings are especially suited for smaller cavities and for patients who may be allergic to metal fillings.

Extractions

If your tooth has been damaged by decay or a fracture, your dentist will try to repair it and restore it with a filling, crown or other treatment. However, sometimes the damage is too serious for the tooth to be repaired and your dentist will need to extract the tooth.
